If you search for how hardy Goumi bushes are, most sites recommend them for USDA zones 4 to 8. “USDA Zone 4 is characterized by average annual minimum winter temperatures ranging from -30°F to -20°F (-34.4°C to -28.9°C)”.
I live in hardiness zone 3. “USDA Hardiness Zone 3 is defined by average annual minimum winter temperatures ranging from -40°F to -30°F (-40°C to -34.4°C).”
To summarize Goumi bushes are reported by nursery sites as being hardy to -34.4’C, and the zone I planted them in may get temperatures as low as -40’C.
I would like to follow two varieties throughout the growing season, and then winter, tracking their progress while documenting low temperatures and snow cover. I planted them in an area of my orchard which may get snow buildup caused by drifting which may help insulate them.
The varieties are Sunrise Ruby and Sweet Scarlet. Pictures taken on July 14, 2026 are below.
